Scott Lake Sinkhole A large sinkhole recently opened under Scott Lake in Lakeland, Florida. Over a weeklong period, the sinkhole expanded and swallowed nearly all the lake. The edges of the original sinkhole collapsed inwards, leaving an expansive void more than 200 feet in diameter and 15-20 feet deep. This once beautiful 291-acre lake has all but disappeared into the ground below. Surprisingly, the draining of a lake by a sinkhole is not unheard of. Lake Jackson, which is near Tallahassee, has drained five times since 1999. I recently had the privilege of taking a helicopter ride over the lake and was able to snap some pictures with a digital camera.
