What Is Wet Waste?

By Andrew M Shrimpton

Well wet waste can be anything from just plain dirty water to hazardous liquid. The most common waste that a vacuum tanker will take is sludge and slim from a septic tank, cesspool or cesspit. The Water inside a septic tank is comprised of three different layers, the first layer is called slim and this is many made of oil and grease that will sit above water. The second layer is call dirty water and this is just basically dirty water, not fresh or clean enough to wash or drink with and the third layer is called the sludge layer, this is basically faeces that sinks to the bottom of the septic tank and creates a layer of sludge. The sludge is broken down by bacteria that are friendly to your septic tank. Whether your septic tank is a domestic tank or commercial tank you will still need to have it emptied by wet waste professional. Most domestic tanks are around 1000 Gallons and will need to be emptied ever year at least depending of the amount of use it gets.

Gully and interceptor waste

Gully and interceptor wet waste is a lot different to the wet waste you find in a septic tank, cesspool or cesspit. The wet waste from a gully/interceptor is manly grit and dirt washed in from the road after light or heavy rain. This can also sometimes leave traces of oil from vehicles that have leaked or split oil onto the road and the rain will wash down into a gully or interceptor.

Why not use a Vacuum tanker to clean my gully/interceptor.

Vacuum tankers are specially designed to empty wet waste with a low debris size and they are designed to suck sewage waste out or pump out clean water for soak away tests and wash-downs. The benefit of using a gully sucker or Low/High Vol jet vac Tanker is if you have a blockage from built up grit or leafs from trees blocking the outlet pipe, you could end up with a flooded yard or parking lot, which could affect your business or even the shutdown of your site as there is no safe access. High vol jet vac tankers will unblock pretty much any blocked gully or interceptor with its high pressure bombs that is just to penetrate the blockage. A bomb on a jet vac tanker is tear shaped metal tip that will fit on the end of a high pressure hose, which will then be lowered into the gully or interceptor and then uses the water pressure to punch through the blockage, at the rear of the bomb there are more holes which will spray out more high pressure water, this helps clean the pipe and break down the offending blockage, which will wash away.

Hazardous or chemical waste disposal.

Most hazardous waste can be disposed of by a normal vacuum tanker (Water with oil in it is classed as low level hazardous waste). If you have a high level hazardous waste liquid or chemical that could dissolve metal, then you would need a tanker that has either a glass or special substances to help prevent or neutralise the chemical/acid.
