North Central Landfill Expansion
Polk County, FloridaProject Description/Services
Madrid Engineering Group, Inc. assisted the general consultant for this 60-acre landfill new cell expansion, by completing soil borings and laboratory testing, a sinkhole lineament study; borrow material suitability, and geotechnical report peer review including separate slope stability and bearing capacity evaluations. After the design was accepted by the FDEP, Madrid Engineering Group worked with the General Consultant’s inspection team to monitor the construction of this facility. This including the landfill cell site clearing and general layout; the bottom HDPE liner construction, the starter berm, installation of extensive drainage works and stormwater facilities, and haul roads and appurtenant structures. MEG kept extensive and detailed construction records to demonstrate compliance with the specifications of the project. Using a handheld GPS unit with its data collection memory tied to a GIS system, the density testing was recorded for each soil lift at each test location and downloaded daily onto the construction database. This method greatly reduced the need for hand notes, duplication of effort, and errors in paperwork. The construction project duration was just 18 months, on an accelerated schedule due to hurricane debris causing severe limitations in available landfill volume. The project was completed in April, 2006 on time and within budget.
