In an ever-increasing fight to clean up surface water before it reaches our streams, rivers, and lakes, new technologies are being sought to reduce pollutants, especially nutrients that can disrupt the natural balance in these waters. Madrid Engineering Group, Inc. has developed PhosPhilter, a solution that may be the most cost effective yet in this battle.

PhosPhilter is the engineered system that uses iron humate, a patented co-product of the water treatment industry, to filter the surface water and retain up to 90 percent of the phosphorus, both particulate and dissolved. Its high cation exchange capacity enables it to retain phosphorus on a mole per mole basis. Iron humate is a combination of organic humus (60-70 percent) and iron (20-30 percent), and resembles an iron rich peaty soil. Iron humate has been tested extensively for FDEP compliance and has been found to be extremely environmentally friendly.
