THERE ARE NO BAD BLOOD TYPES!
There are 4 main blood “types”, A, B, AB, and O, each with either a negative or positive Rh factor, resulting in 8 blood types. The distribution of these blood types in the USA is shown in the table below. When a blood type is referred to as “positive”, this means that there is a very thin coating of antigens present on each red blood cell. When these antigens are absent, the blood type is referred to as “negative”. The only way to determine your blood type is to have a blood sample drawn and tested.

FACTS AND FIGURES
- Nationally, only about 5% of eligible donors participate in blood drives.
- About 4,300 pints (units) of blood are used every day in Canada and the US combined. This converts to about 540 gallons per day.
- 1 in 10 people entering the hospital will require a blood transfusion.
- 1 pint (unit) of blood can save up to 3 lives.
