Madrid Engineering Group, Inc. (MEG) recently teamed with Skanska and Parsons Brinkerhoff in pursuit of the SR-83/US-331 Design-Build bridge project, over Choctawhatchee Bay, for FDOT District 3 (FPID 220664-2-52-01; FDOT Contract No. E3L23). The bridge will be approximately 12,000 linear feet long, paralleling the existing one.

Our team was officially awarded this project on June 25, 2013. The expected duration of the geotechnical drilling and lab testing portions of this project is about 3 months.  MEG is currently drilling about 75 150-foot deep borings, most of which are being completed by a truck-mounted drill set up on a barge.  Boreholes are positioned using the tugboat and located in the field using a GPS unit.  Several other borings are being performed for other aspects of the project, including the collection of bulk samples at depth to assist with bench scale testing for the soil improvement aspects of the project.

The total number of borings is around 180, and the total drilling length of roughly 14,000     feet. We started this job in late July and so far we have completed about 5,300 feet of drilling plus collected all of the requested bulk samples.

Our Panama City office is challenged with all of the geotechnical drilling, while the laboratory soils testing of this project is being done at our CMEC and FDOT certified laboratory at our Bartow headquarters.

MEG is very pleased with the success of our new office in Panama City and will be obtaining a laboratory certification at that location as we continue to grow in our commitment to support District 2 and 3 from this location. We look forward to working with our clients on current and future projects.

We will keep you updated on the progress of this job in our newsletter.
