Matheson Tri-Gas Industrial Facility

Project Description/Services
Madrid Engineering Group, Inc. conducted a subsurface investigation to assist in the design of the Matheson Tri-Gas facility in Lakeland, Florida.

The facility is designed to handle and distribute medical gases. The project consisted of two ground storage tanks for liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen, a cold box structure and smaller ancillary buildings. Paved drive and storm water areas were also included in the facility design.

Purpose of Investigation

The purpose of MEG’s subsurface investigation was to provide subsurface exploration and evaluation for structures foundation design recommendations and to provide soils information to assist the design engineers in their storm water pond design calculations.

The program consisted of a series of SPT borings completed within the structure footprints as well as boring completed within paved drive and storm water areas. MEG provided both shallow and deep foundation recommendations for the proposed structures including pile capacity analysis. Based on our analyses, it was determined that deep foundations would be the appropriate foundation system for the storage tanks and cold box structure based on estimated settlements of clayey soils.

MEG also completed a ground penetrating radar survey with sub-consultant GeoView at the site to identify any anomalous areas possibly associated with karst activity and completed pile installation monitoring during the construction phase.
